A Study on the Empowerment Experience of People with Mental Illnesses in the Clubhouse

Abstract
This is phenomenological research to understand experience of people with mental illnesses use for the clubhouse and being empowerment. Also the people with mental illnesses participated as members of research in plans division, collection of data, and the process whole of analytical etc., and attempted the direct empowerment of the people with mental illnesses who participate in the research team, suggesting the possibility of teammate in mental health research. From 2008 June, 8 clubhouses¡¯ staffs and the members who have an interest organized as a research team, deciding research subject and method etc. together, from November until end of December in 2008, focus group interview and in-depth interview were advanced with research participants of 40 people in the object. With the analysis of the data collected by Giorgi(1985) methods, results of 14 constituents and 33 sub constituents were drawn. The essence and meaning of empowerment are 7 items like, ¡°recovery of the life as healthy adults in society¡±, ¡°getting inner power,¡±, ¡°challenge1: to overcome the feeling of discord and a challenge as a process of growth¡± and ¡°challenge2: people with mental illnesses who are in the process of recovering¡±, ¡°being an initiative leader of self-development and self-help¡±, ¡°acknowledged by acquaintances and others¡±, ¡°my life and society with the clubhouse". Based on these results, the theoretical and practical suggestions were discussed for the empowerment practice for better life in the community of people with mental illnesses.
